Category: looped stitch family

Use: filling areas, secure edges

Translations: Knopflochstich (DE); point de boutonnière (FR)

Attention: This stitch is very often equalized with the blanket stitch. Though very similiar in construction, the buttonhole stitch is actually the knotted version of the blanket stitch. The buttonhole stitch was invented to make the buttonholes sturdier – which is achieved through the knotted line which edges the inner rim of the hole. It’s not easy to show in pictures alone which movement you are supposed to make.
